Christer’s biggest achievements

  1. Christer lead the RISE organisational transformation with a focus on a new leadership and culture, and a redesign of structure and processes, The 'change work' was characterised by the employees and managers participation where a continuous engagement of ideas created a better final solution.
  2. Christer was responsible for the Volvo Group's corporate culture transformation, which was carried out on a global level for both management and employees. A clear strategy, a continuous dialogue in the organisation and a 'viral' approach made it possible for a dynamic 'grassroots movement' and structured leadership development.
  3. Christer combined the responsibility for the long-term IT strategy (focus; cost optimisation and consolidation) with digital innovation (focus; exploring digital opportunities with a quick ROI). It enabled new business opportunities in real time, while a long-term IT agenda could be pursued for the Group.

Christer’s beliefs

  1. Be curious and brave; change is GOOD! As a person and as an organisation, you must constantly evolve - if you stand still, you will stagnate.
  2. Culture and leadership must support the organisation's strategy and vision. Cultural change is strategically driven at all levels. You must challenge yourself and your leadership to be the culture you want to see in others.
  3. Follow your heart and let the right side of your brain work at least as much as the left. People who think differently make you more innovative and transformative - surround yourself with them.

About Christer

Christer was a member of the global management team at Volvo IT for many years, with a position as Global Communications Director. He was the leader of a team consisting of some twenty people in seven different countries. Leading a team with so many different nationalities was a true challenge with a lot of learnings in team dynamics and development, and understanding different cultures.

Christer proceeded to build and lead a digital innovation function at the Volvo Group made up by ten experts in the field based in Sweden, France and China. The leadership strategy was to use diversity in several dimensions to generate and realise radical innovations.

Students were continuously onboarded to further increase the diversity and team dynamics. Innovative digital solutions for Volvo and its customers were developed and tested at a high pace, examples being Virtual Reality in the factory (instead of workshop manuals), a Shazam app for diagnosing engine problems, and a virtual marketplace in India for drivers to bid on transport contracts. Christer mentions that one of the keys to success was the dynamic culture and radical collaboration between everyone in the team, as well as the customers and digital suppliers.

Within the management of the Volvo Group, Christer established a strong network, which resulted in a special assignment – to make a plan for the Volvo Group to strengthen its culture and find a more value-driven way of growing its business. This led to culture transformation globally with a new set of values, and new ways of working with leadership and culture.

Getting people and teams to become more aware of their own values, their leadership and how culture affects goal fulfilment in their business, is a dynamic and developing process – and was a great experience and journey for Christer as well.

For four years, Christer has been running his own company in the field of value-driven business development and transformation. He has assignments for RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) such as integrating acquired companies, redesigning the new organisation structure and set-up, and establishing and growing a common culture for leaders and employees. Christer says ‘RISE is on a transformation journey to create a more sustainable and innovative Sweden and its highly stimulating to be a driving force on this journey with them’.

In the summer of 2018, Christer and his partner heard about an orphanage in Nairobi that was struggling to provide food, clothing and support for the children. Holiday plans were quickly changed and they left Sweden a couple of weeks later with 60+ kilos of clothes, and an impressive amount of money raised to help the children shape a better life. They learned so much and contributed on a small scale of change in both Sweden and Kenya. This was an experience that exemplifies Christer’s values and driving foreces that are best described as: curiosity, guided by value and vision, positive, committed, stubborn and passionate.
